(U.S. Virgin Islands)- Attorney General Denise George reminds everyone to recognize our law enforcement officers in honor of police week while paying homage to the men and women who have made the ultimate sacrifice. National Police Week is recognized May 15-21. Peace Officers Memorial Day was recognized on Sunday.
Each year, during National Police Week, our nation celebrates the contributions of law enforcement officers from around the country, recognizing their hard work, dedication, loyalty, and commitment to keeping communities safe. “We honor the bravery, sacrifice, and dedication of our officers who put their lives on the line every day to protect the life, health, and safety of every one of us in our community. They have answered that call to public service and remain on call 24-7 as part of their duties. Here in the V.I. We say thank you to our front-line protection against those who chose to break the law,” said AG George.
“In honor of Peace Officers Memorial Day, we must not forget the men and women in law enforcement that have made the ultimate sacrifice. The theme for the week is “Your Police Services: Helping Build Safer Communities. “It’s an opportunity for us to emphasize how police officers are both members of the community they live in and members of the police community they work in. Let us show our support by participating in the week events that began on Sunday with church services and ends on Saturday”, she added.
This important recognition began in 1962 when President John F. Kennedy issued the first proclamation for Peace Officers Memorial Day and National Police Week to remember and honor law enforcement officers for their service and sacrifices. Peace Officers Memorial Day, which every year falls on May 15, specifically honors law enforcement officers killed or disabled in the line of duty. AG George said, “I am personally very thankful for our law enforcement officers for their continued partnership with our V.I. Department of Justice office. We could not do the work we do without your continued support, dedication, and commitment”.
