U.S. Virgin Islands – Virgin Islands Attorney General Gordon C. Rhea announced today that 36-year-old Curtis Williams of St. Croix has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for the unlawful possession of a firearm. The sentencing held on March 14, 2025, was handed down by V.I. Superior Court Judge Ernest Morris. In addition to his prison sentence, Williams was fined $10,000 and ordered to pay restitution in the amount of $83,599.18 for medical expenses incurred by the victim.
Williams pled guilty to the charges on February 5, 2025, stemming from a shooting that took place on August 22, 2021, in the parking lot near the bus stop at 8 West Lane in Christiansted. During a dispute, Williams shot Iran Maldonado multiple times with an illegal firearm, leaving the victim with life-threatening injuries.
Attorney General Rhea commended the collaborative efforts of the V.I. Department of Justice (DOJ), the Virgin Islands Police Department, (VIPD) in bringing the case to a successful resolution. He specifically recognized DOJ prosecutor Robert Pickett, Esq., Assistant Attorney General from the St. Croix District of the Criminal Division, as well as the DOJ Litigation and Victim Services Teams, and the VIPD’s Criminal Investigations Bureau for their diligent work throughout the investigation and prosecution of this case.
“The successful conviction of Curtis Williams reflects the hard work and commitment of our law enforcement and legal teams,” said Attorney General Rhea. “We will continue to work tirelessly to ensure that those who commit violent crimes are held accountable and that justice is served for the victims and our community.”
