U.S. Virgin Islands – Attorney General Denise George announces the extradition of 38-year-old Luis C. Cancio of Elizabeth, New Jersey. He was charged with being a fugitive from Justice.
Cancio was detained by Customs and Border Patrol at the Cyril E. Airport and arrested on April 12th, 2021, by the Virgin Islands Police Department while attempting to travel from the Cyril E. King Airport to Newark, New Jersey. The fugitive was on parole based on his early release from prison based on his conviction of Manslaughter in the 2nd degree.
While on Parole, Mr. Cancio failed to notify Parole of his travel to the Virgin Islands, and as a result, a warrant was issued for his arrest.
Cancio was turned over to the custody of the Bureau of Corrections without bail, pending his extradition hearing.
The V.I. Dept. of Justice, Special Investigation Division, filed a criminal complaint of extradition on April 14th and Mr. Cancio voluntarily waived extradition back to New Jersey. He was extradited this morning by New Jersey Parole Agents.
