DOJ: Business Owner formally charged with DUI

ST.CROIX, U.S.V.I. – Attorney General Denise George announced that Calvin N. Belle was arraigned July 8 in the Superior Court of the Virgin Islands on the DUI charge filed by the Attorney General against him.

Belle, the owner of the Sprat Net Beach Bar & Grill, was charged with Driving Under the Influence, a violation of V.I.C. Title 20 Section 493(a) and (b).

According to the Probable Cause Fact Sheet filed by the arresting officer, On June 18, 2020, at approximately 11:36 pm he was exiting the Consumer Service Station and was alerted about a white pickup truck stopped in the middle of the road at the intersection of Queen Mary Highway and Grover Road by a concerned citizen  The officer drove over and stopped behind the truck to ask Belle if he was okay.  Belle replied that he was okay and waiting for the light to change, but there is no traffic light at that intersection. The officer said he detected the smell of alcohol coming from him as he spoke, so he asked Belle to pull over to administer a standard field sobriety test. Belle insisted he was not intoxicated; however, he failed the SFST.

At arraignment, the Defendant entered a not guilty plea to the charge.
