DOJ: Elvis Fredericks. Jr. pleads not guilty to possession of stolen property

St. Croix, V.I. – Attorney General Denise George announced that Elvis Fredericks, Jr. was arraigned today in the Superior Court of the Virgin Islands on the formal criminal charges filed by the Attorney General against him for possession of stolen property; a 2017 gray Ford Focus registered to Metro Motors, values with a list price of $29,900.

The Criminal Information, which is the formal charging document filed by the Attorney General for prosecution of the case, charges the Defendant with 5 counts, Possession of Stolen Property in violation of V.I. Code ANN tit. 14.

If convicted for Possession of Stolen Property, the defendant faces imprisonment for the remainder of his/her natural life without parole

According to the affidavit filed by Detective Eugene Alcendor on Tuesday, October 9, 2018 at 11:00am, Fredericks was operating a magnetic gray, Ford Focus, bearing tag #H-605. Officers executed a traffic stop after observing Mr. Fredericks make an illegal right turn.  The officer requested the registration and vehicle insurance and Fredericks was unable to provide them. The officer requested verification of the tag number and vehicle sticker check through Central dispatch and they were both registered to 2 other vehicles. The office removed the tag and notified Fredericks that the vehicle had to be towed since it was not registered or insured. Fredericks notified a towing company and the vehicle was towed to the Tutu Hi Rise Community.  The officer was advised by a citizen that the vehicle may have been one of the vehicles stolen from Metro Motors in the immediate aftermath of Hurricane Irma. A manager at Ford Metro Motors stated that following Hurricane IRMA 22 vehicles were stolen and 2 had not been recovered.  The VIN number was provided, and the officer traveled back to the community and confirmed that description information including the VIN no. was consistent with what was provided by Ford Metro Motors.  Officers then contacted Fredericks in area and placed him under arrest for possession of stolen property.  Fredericks was ordered to place his hands behind his back, he did not comply and pulled away from the officers. He also struck an officer and pusher her to the ground and fled the scene.

At arraignment, the Defendant entered a plea of not guilty to all charges for Possession of Stolen Property.

Attorney General George cautions the public that the Criminal Investigation is a charging document, and the defendants are not guilty of the offenses charged unless or until they are proven beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.
