Attorney General Smith Issues a Statement on Shooting Death of VIPD Detective Delberth Phipps Jr.

 (U.S. Virgin Islands)- V.I. Attorney General Ariel Smith today expressed sorrow and concern about the shooting death of Virgin Islands Police Detective Delberth Phipps Jr. 

“It is with great sorrow that I extend my deepest condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of Virgin Islands Police Detective Delberth Phipps Jr. I am extremely saddened and, as a member of this community, I am outraged by this tragic loss,” said Attorney General Smith. “Officer Phipps took an oath of honor to protect our community and was fulfilling his oath when he was killed in the line of duty on Tuesday morning. We are grateful for the service and sacrifice of Detective Phipps Jr. and all police officers who continue to serve this community. Let us all keep our officers and this community in our prayers.” 

The Attorney General assured the community that the Virgin Islands Department of Justice will take all necessary legal action that this situation warrants, noting, “Please be assured that the Virgin Islands Department of Justice will use its best efforts to ensure that all appropriate steps are taken to see that justice is done, in accordance with applicable rules and the law.”
