AG George : Sex offender Asymo L. Prentice arrested by DOJ Agents

U.S. Virgin Islands – Atty General Denise George today announced the arrest of 29-year-old, Asymo L. Prentice of St. Croix. Prentice, a registered sex offender was apprehended by DOJ special agents on May 5th at the DOJ complex at LaReine, St. Croix. He was arrested for failure to comply with registration requirements and violating probation. Prentice’s name was also entered in the NCIC system and it was revealed that he has an outstanding warrant in Georgia.

AG: Third Circuit Court disallows GVI payment of $43.1 million in interest and penalties and declines to award billions of dollars in ADEC to GERS

U.S. Virgin Islands – V.I. Attorney General Denise George announced today that the Third Circuit Court of Appeals issued its decision in the cross appeals by the Government of the Virgin Islands and the Government Employees Retirement System regarding the amount of missing employer contribution, including interest and penalties, due to GERS, and whether the 1984 Consent Judgment obligates the Government to pay the Actuarially Determined Employer Contribution (“ADEC”) as the GERS claimed. The Third Circuit affirmed in part and vacated in part the February 2, 2020 and April 3, 2020 Judgment of the District Court and remanded the case for further proceedings.

V.I. Attorney General George: U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit issues opinion in the Reefco excise tax case

U.S. Virgin Islands – V.I. Attorney General Denise George announces the decision of the U.S. Third Circuit Court of Appeals in Reefco Services Inc. v. Government of the Virgin Islands Bureau of Internal Revenue, in which the GVI appealed the decision of the District Court of the Virgin Islands that enjoined the GVI from collecting excise taxes, thereby costing the GVI millions of dollars in revenues.
